Volos

The port and the city of Volos are situated at the innermost point of the Pagasetic Gulf, midway between Athens and Salonica in Greece, and in convenient proximity to the Sporades Islands, Euboea and Chalkidiki by sea, as well as Meteora and mountain Pelion by land.

The port of Volos, reputedly the departure point of the mythical expedition of Jason and the Argonauts, continues a long-established maritime tradition… Today it is the third most important in Greece: it is entensive, dynamic and offers every modern facility, while some of its parts are in development. The port is busy with every kind of shipping: commercial ships, tankers, container-ships, the local fishing fleet and off course with cruise-ships, ferries, other passenger ships, and leisure crafts.

This city has a great history and there are a number of sights and activities for the visitor to enjoy: the archaeological museum, significant finds from Neolithic, Hellenistic and Geometric periods and fascinating finds from graves of the second and third centuries.

The arts are also well represented either by theatre, galleries, concerts, local displays and traditional feasts or by writers like Kitsos Makris and Alexandros Papadiamandis, painters like Chrisoula Zogia and Theophilos, great poets and musicians, all inspired by the natural beauty and traditional style of life in this region.

A variety of international cuisine is available and also lots of traditional Greek restaurants and taverns. But the speciality of Volos is the 'tsipourtadiko', a kind of traditional tavern near the sea, where tsipouro is served accompanied by salty and spicy seafood and appetisers.

Nearby, the mount Pelion appears green and imposing. The picturesque villages come up in an impressive green forest, with their traditional houses, decorated walls, stairs of stone, Byzantine churches, folklore arts, stone paths, fountains with fresh-cool water are so much part of the landscape. An excursion on the renovated traditional train of Pelion allows the traveller to enjoy the sights and appreciate the bridges, which are technical constructions made by Ernesto de Chirco at the turn of the last century.

At the eastern side of the mountain Pelion is the Aegean Sea, ending in wonderful coastlines and clear, emerald waters. The pine-clad islands of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos, where is the National Sea Park, are in a very short distance from the port of Volos.

Two hours driving from Volos will take the visitor to Meteora, the famous world unique forest of stones and rocks, which towers above a valley floor. There is the place where up to 24 old orthodox monasteries are built on the huge stones and some of them are still inhabited and offer their hospitality to the visitors…

Volos, is one of the Olympic Cities, as it will offers its hospitality to Olympic Games during Olympics 2004.
