The new target with a unique area - Mediterranean spirit and Central European heritage

In the very center of Kvarner lies Rijeka, one of Croatia’s largest towns. Rijeka and its ring have everything that a first-rate tourist region needs: landmarks, rich cultural programs, entertainment, fabulous beaches, romantic towns and villages and stunning nature. Rijeka provides ample opportunities for amusement, relaxation and urban exploration. More than that Rijeka is a great place for a business event or sports training. Here you will find everything you have been looking for and much more.

Rijeka harbors rich history and has numerous monuments and attractions. Throughout the year various events and festivals take place in Rijeka and the nearby towns of Kraljevica, Kostrena, Bakar, Kastav, Jelenje and Čavle. This establishes a balance between the bustling urban center of Rijeka and the more relaxed rhythm of the town's ring. Rich in history and tradition, located where the mountains meet the sea, Rijeka and the ring are more than just a historic attraction; Rijeka has numerous restaurants and bars, night clubs and various art and other types of events taking place here will suit every type of traveler.

One of the most recognizable Rijeka postcards is undoubtedly Trsat, a medieval fortified town and once home to one of the oldest Croatian noble families - the Frankopan family. The medieval fortified town (13th century) was reconstructed in the 17th century and renovated in 1826 in a romantic spirit. The renovation was completed in 1960 and the medieval town became a tourist attraction. A wonderful view of Kvarner Bay extends from Trsat. The graves of the Frankopans and the local shrine are visited each year by many people of faith praying to the Holy Virgin of Trsat to bless them with health, luck and strength. Trsat is an unavoidable landmark as the oldest Marian shrine sanctuary in Croatia. Pope John Paul II paid a visit here in 2003. A life-size statue of the beloved Pope has been erected here in his honor. Trsat can be also reached by a stairway – the longest in the country - consisting of 538 steps.

Rijeka has asserted itself as a town of culture, offering creative art shows and refreshing entertainment. Each year Rijeka hosts the Summer Nights Festival offering a rich program held at various locations and the Rijeka International Small Scene Theatre Festival is a must-see. Also, at the beginning of each year since 1982 Rijeka celebrates Carnival as a member of the European Federation of Carnival Towns (FECC) and the Sunday Times has included it among the most attractive events in the world. Today, owing to its youthful freshness, Rijeka is loved by young travelers from all over the world. Rijeka is the cradle of numerous customs and religious traditions and one of the most popular is the famous Rijeka Carnival. The area also provides great opportunities for culinary pursuits, featuring excellent wine and locally-grown produce. It is sufficient to say that a famous dry sparkling wine used to be produced from grapes harvested in the Bakar area. These are amazing vineyards with strong vines that have persevered owing to the exceptional dedication of the local vintners.

Rijeka has plenty of everything: entertainment, attractions and natural beauty. Here one can enjoy the seaside throughout the day and spend a day in nature, and in the evening go out and explore the exciting life of this vibrant town booming with energy.

Rijeka and the ring boast a wealth of gastronomic delights. Local cuisine revolves around fish and seafood but meat, particularly lamb, pasta and vegetable dishes are also popular.

Here one finds true Mediterranean cuisine. Dishes are almost always laced with olive oil and seasoned with laurel and rosemary and other native spices. Many tourists choose dishes cooked in a cast iron pot covered with hot coals – i.e. the traditional way of baking bread, roasting meat and octopus, etc.

Did you know that Kvarner scampi are the best in the world? Even though no one can fully explain this indisputable fact, the differences are clear: the Kvarner scampi distinguish themselves by their light red colour and thin shell and their peculiarity – according to the experts – lies in the fact that they live in very shallow sea with many springs of drinkable water and are therefore very soft and sweet.

One of the Kvarner's «best of» is undoubtedly the vrbnička žlahtina - an extraordinary wine obtained from the homonymous autochthonous sort of white grapes from Krk and Vinodol mountains that was named after its native soil – the small town of Vrbnik on the island of Krk. It distinguishes itself by extraordinary accord and harmony and refined aroma and bouquet.

Whatever your choice, it is certain that you will enjoy experiencing the gastronomic legacy of Rijeka at cozy restaurants and taverns in the wider area, offering local and international cuisine and providing great wine lists featuring exceptional domestic wines. Choose and enjoy!
