MedCruise presented to the cruise world gathered in Fort Lauderdale for Seatrade Cruise Global event, the 2018 edition of its annual Statistical Report, covering in detail the cruise activities in MedCruise ports during 2017.

The presentation took place during a special conference session entitled “Trends in the Med” and was attended by more than 100 MedCruise member representatives, cruise line executives, journalists and other cruise industry stakeholders.

In this report, the Association reveals the strength of its ports and associate members working together with industry stakeholders for the benefit of the local communities and aiming to achieve a sustainable cruise growth.

In 2017, MedCruise membership welcomed 25,9m cruise passenger movements. This number is 18% higher comparing to a decade earlier, as the cruise passenger movements recorded in 2008 did not exceed 21,9 million. In 2018, the total number of passenger movements is expected to be around 27m.

In terms of cruise ship calls, MedCruise Ports recorded 12.139 in 2017, which represents a total that is lower by 22% comparing to the 15.475 cruise calls of 2008. The trend of cruise vessels becoming bigger in size has been deterministic as far as the decline in cruise calls is concerned. Notably, 2017 was the third successive year that the average number of passengers per cruise call in the Med and its adjoining seas was higher than 2.000.

Presenting the report, MedCruise President Airam Díaz Pastor stated “The statistics of 2017 reveal the positive features in several parts of the Mediterranean and its adjoining seas. We all work to support members in their efforts to invest and attract more cruise activities in the MedCruise region and are committed to develop the strategy voted by the General Assembly in October 2017 to further enhance the position of MedCruise ports and the Association itself in the cruise industry.

About the report

The annual MedCruise statistical report “Cruise Activities in MedCruise ports” is among the flagship publications of the Association. Produced by the Association’s Secretariat, it details the actual picture of cruise activities in the Med and its adjoining seas, while revealing the related trends and enabling the understanding of the present challenges. It also facilitates the adjustment of MedCruise ports and associate members to contemporary market structures.
