A groundbreaking Croatian initiative that unites technology, tourism and nature conservation has been named a finalist for one of the world’s most prestigious sustainable tourism awards. The SeaCras App, a smart sea-quality monitoring tool developed through a partnership between Zadar Cruise Port – Global Ports Holding, the Rewilding Velebit Foundation, and the technology company SeaCras, has been shortlisted for the World’s Leading Marine & Biodiversity Conservation Programme at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards 2025.

The innovative application leverages artificial intelligence and satellite data to provide real-time updates on sea cleanliness. Free for all users, the app is currently available at Zadar Cruise Port, in the protected Zavratnica Bay, and in the nearby coastal town of Jablanac, both located within Velebit Nature Park. Visitors, cruise passengers and local comunity can simply scan QR codes on-site to instantly access transparent water-quality data for the area.

First piloted in Zadar Cruise Port last summer, the project was expanded this year to protected natural sites under the management of the Rewilding Velebit Foundation. Its nomination recognizes forward-thinking initiatives that safeguard marine ecosystems while fostering sustainable tourism. The Croatian project now stands among just four global finalists. The winner will be determined by public vote, with the award ceremony scheduled for October in Dubai.

This recognition follows additional international acclaim: in June, the initiative was highlighted by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Future Investment Institute as a global model of regenerative tourism, and was presented at the UN Ocean Conference, the leading international gathering of experts and policymakers dedicated to oceans and seas.

“Travelers are increasingly demanding transparency and sustainable management from the destinations they visit. This nomination affirms that we are on the right track, and that innovative solutions developed in Croatia can inspire the global industry,” said Rebeka V. Pevec, General Manager of Zadar Cruise Port.
