The smart electrical power grid has been completed at the Port of Savona, in full compliance with the 30 June 2026 deadline established under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) Green Ports Projects. The achievement marks a significant milestone in the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority’s commitment to the decarbonisation of port activities, through improved energy efficiency and the increased use of renewable energy sources.
The Ports of Genoa, a highly energy-intensive hub, will be equipped to provide, store and distribute energy in real-time in Savona. The implementation of the technologically advanced infrastructure integrates the production of clean energy from the solar plants installed across the rooftops of six port warehouses, flanked by two lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Existing energy storage units have been upgraded and an additional three have been constructed to ensure the seamless integration and optimal performance of the system. An advanced IT-Energy Management System continuously monitors and optimises energy flows in real-time, prioritising electricity generated from renewable sources, whilst drawing from the national grid only when required.
The system has been designed to supply power to a wide range of port common user services, including port gates, public lighting, administrative buildings and EV charging points for Port Authority vehicles, which have also been delivered under PNRR-funded projects.
The energy system is currently undergoing final testing, in line with the overall project schedule. Once fully operational, it will establish the Port of Savona not only as a strategic logistics platform, but also as a pioneering sustainable energy hub. The completion of the smart grid represents a major step forward in the Port of Savona’s ecological transition. The system is expected to deliver significant environmental and operational benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, enhanced energy efficiency and greater resilience of the port’s energy infrastructure, further strengthening the port’s overall sustainability, competitiveness and energy independence.
