The trade fair has enabled the destination to strengthen its de-seasonalisation strategy and establish itself as a boutique port for high-end cruises

Tarragona Cruise Port has cemented its position as a rising destination in the Western Mediterranean during its participation in Seatrade Cruise Med. The premier event for the Mediterranean cruise sector, held on 16 and 17 September in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, highlighted the growing interest of cruise lines in the Costa Daurada, driven by a distinctive offering that combines heritage, scenery, gastronomy and up to five UNESCO World Heritage sites. This event has allowed Tarragona to reinforce its commitment to extending the cruise season and to establish itself as a boutique port for high-end cruises.

The Tarragona Cruise Port delegation held meetings with cruise lines and tour operators, advancing key strategic objectives including securing new homeport itineraries, extending the cruise season and attracting premium and luxury operators and vessels.

This approach aims to promote sustainable growth, driving the de-seasonalisation of the Costa Daurada tourism sector, attracting high-spending visitors and encouraging travellers to explore the destination before boarding or after disembarking.

The fair also provided a platform to showcase the destination’s diverse range of experiences. These go from cultural and heritage activities —such as Roman Tarragona, the Modernist architecture of Reus, the Cistercian Route and the traditional human towers (castells)— to food and wine experiences, discoveries of natural landscapes like the Ebro Delta and family leisure attractions such as PortAventura World.

In addition, the operational advantages offered by the Port were highlighted, featuring a first-class facility like the Moll de Balears and an innovative, sustainable cruise terminal. This setup ensures a seamless experience both for embarking and disembarking passengers and for those in transit.

A season of successes

Seatrade Cruise Med arrives as the cruise season in Tarragona enters its final phase. With just two months of activity remaining, forecasts of around eighty port calls remain unchanged. Beyond the figures, 2026 has been defined by outstanding milestones, notably Viking’s commitment to establishing Tarragona as one of its Mediterranean homeports. Driven by this partnership, Tarragona hosted the maiden call of the Viking Yi Dun last August — marking the Western Mediterranean debut of the cruise line’s vessel tailored exclusively for the Chinese market.

Other notable milestones achieved throughout the season include the call of Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas — one of the largest cruise ships in the world — and the consolidation of Tarragona as a homeport for MSC Cruises, highlighted by the weekly calls of the MSC Orchestra from May to October.
