Double nomination for Valletta Cruise Port

Valletta Cruise Port is honoured to have been nominated under two categories in the ‘World Cruise Awards’ now running in its second year, an offspring of the respected ‘World Travel Awards’.

The nomination for ‘World’s Best Cruise Terminal for Sustainability 2022’ comes at a time when Valletta Cruise Port, a signatory of the ‘UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism’ is supporting a €49.9 million initiative spearheaded by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta to develop shore-side electricity infrastructure as part of the Grand Harbour Clean Air Project. This includes a €37m investment to provide shore power on the 5 main cruise ship quays of Valletta’s Grand Harbour by tail-end of 2023. The project will result in major air quality improvements with drastic reductions in emissions within the Grand Harbour.

For the second consecutive year Valletta Cruise Port has been nominated as ‘Europe’s Best Cruise Terminal’. Post-pandemic, Valletta Cruise Port together with numerous local and international stakeholders worked tirelessly on a number of projects and initiatives, with a stepped restart to cruise operations ongoing since August 2020, welcoming 59,180 passenger movements on 32 calls in 2020 and 147,132 passenger movements on 107 calls in 2021. It is forecasted that in 2022 Valletta Cruise Port will welcome about half a million passenger movements on over 250 calls, with 2022 presenting a good recovery period and bookings for 2023 being favourable.

Stephen Xuereb, COO of Global Ports Holding and CEO of Valletta Cruise Port commented, ‘It is with great pride to see Valletta Cruise Port and a number of Global Ports Holding ports nominated for various categories in the World Cruise Awards. These awards aim to recognize, reward and celebrate excellence in the global cruise sector. Global Ports Holding is indeed focused on continuous improvement, whilst striving to provide the best service to our guests and customers, whilst simultaneously innovating services in our ports and destinations and contributing to the communities we operate in’.
