The pilot demonstration of the European project SMAUG was successfully completed at the Port of Heraklion on 19 and 20 March 2026, marking a significant milestone for the port’s participation in innovative security initiatives. The project is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme and is implemented with the participation of more than 20 partners across Europe, including ports, research institutions, technology providers and competent authorities.
SMAUG aims to enhance port security through the deployment of advanced multi-domain surveillance technologies across land, sea and air. Within the framework of the pilot at the Port of Heraklion, coordinated operational trials were carried out involving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), as well as advanced sensors and data analytics systems, enabling a comprehensive real-time operational picture of port activities.
The successful implementation of the pilot demonstrated the system’s capability to integrate and coordinate multiple technologies, improving early detection and assessment of potential threats and contributing to the overall enhancement of the port’s operational readiness.
The participation of the Heraklion Port Authority in the SMAUG project confirms its strategic commitment to innovation and the continuous upgrading of its infrastructure and services. At the same time, it strengthens the port’s position as a modern and secure maritime hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, capable of supporting advanced operational applications and contributing to the development of next-generation “smart ports”.
The CΕΟ of Heraklion Port Authority, Mr Minas Papadakis, stated:
“The successful completion of the SMAUG pilot at the Port of Heraklion represents a significant milestone for our organization. Through close collaboration with leading European partners and the deployment of advanced technological solutions, we are effectively enhancing the security of our port infrastructure and our operational capabilities. Heraklion demonstrates its ability to operate at the forefront of innovation, actively contributing to the transition towards smarter and more secure ports.”
