Port Tarragona has launched the first tenders related to the implementation of the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system at Balears Wharf, with the aim of electrifying the infrastructure and advancing the decarbonisation of cruise operations.
In this initial phase, two transformer substations have been put out to tender, with a combined investment of €900,657 (excluding VAT): a 1,000 kVA main transformation centre located in the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL), which will centralise the power supply, and a distribution and protection centre at Balears Wharf.
The project also includes the installation of 3.1 km of underground medium-voltage line (25 kV) from the external electrical substation to the new main transformation centre, 3.4 km of new internal medium-voltage lines within the port area, and an 840-metre subsea connection to cross the port entrance channel. The system will have an initial available capacity of 10 MW.
Through this initiative, Port Tarragona reinforces its commitment to sustainability and to the reduction of atmospheric emissions (CO₂, NOx, SOx and particulate matter), as well as to improving environmental and acoustic conditions within the port area, in line with European energy transition policies.
