Work is progressing according to the planned schedule following the signing of the site layout approval on January 8 and already includes demolitions, earthworks, and the installation of conduits for lighting and irrigation.
The first phase, with a budget of nearly one million euros, also includes the procurement of urban furniture, children’s playground equipment, and outdoor fitness facilities, with the aim of transforming this space into a new area for public use.
The Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas has begun construction works on the future Urban Park at the Port of Las Palmas, a strategic initiative aimed at creating a new open space for the public within the port environment. The works corresponding to the first phase are progressing according to the planned schedule since the signing of the site layout approval, formalized on January 8.
In this first phase, which has a budget of €956,693 and whose execution corresponds to the contractor Asfaltos Jaén SLU, the general layout of the project area has already been carried out in accordance with the project plans, as well as the initial demolition works. These have included the removal of the existing building, its foundations, the perimeter wall, and the asphalt surfaces and curbs of the current planters.
At the same time, earthmoving works have also begun through the excavation of the terrain in the areas designated for future planters and landscaped zones, thus advancing the physical configuration of the new space.
The president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, Beatriz Calzada, highlighted that “this initiative represents a very important step in our strategy to open the port to the city. We want this new urban park to become an accessible, inclusive, and useful space for citizens, strengthening the port-city relationship in an especially significant area of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.”
Currently, demolition work on remaining elements and the removal of pavement continue, along with the excavations required for the construction of trenches for the installation of public lighting conduits and the irrigation network, essential infrastructures for the subsequent development of the park.
At the same time, orders have already been placed for the urban furniture planned for this phase, which will include outdoor fitness equipment, children’s play systems, and various urban facilities included in the project.
Calzada added that “this park is intended to become a new meeting point for citizens, combining green areas, leisure spaces, and facilities that will allow people to enjoy a new urban area within the port environment.”
A new green space to strengthen port-city integration
The future urban park is part of the strategy to transform port spaces promoted by the Port Authority of Las Palmas in order to combine the port’s economic activity with new urban, social, and environmental uses.
This park will become an open space with landscaped areas, pedestrian routes, and facilities designed for public use in one of the areas with the greatest urban development potential within the port environment.
