The Port of Volos is proud to announce the successful completion of extensive restoration works, following the severe damage caused by the devastating floods of 2023. The natural disaster had resulted in over 700,000 cubic metres of debris being deposited in the port basin, significantly reducing operating depths and forcing the cancellation of multiple cruise calls.
After months of intensive effort, the dredging operations at the cruise pier have been finalised. The approach points now offer a restored and functional depth of -11 metres, re-establishing the port’s capacity to accommodate large cruise vessels.
The first major milestone came today, 12 June 2025, with the arrival of Norwegian Viva – a 293-metre-long vessel with a draft exceeding 7.5 metres – carrying 3,352 passengers and 1,469 crew. The ship’s successful call marks a key moment in Volos’s return to the Mediterranean cruise circuit.
A new bathymetric survey by the Hydrographic Service is scheduled for late June, providing updated depth data for cruise companies and relevant stakeholders. This will further facilitate itinerary planning and allow cruise lines to once again include Volos in their deployments with full confidence.
The Port Authority of Volos invites all cruise partners to resume operations and adjust their calls accordingly, reaffirming its readiness to provide a safe, efficient, and fully restored cruise experience.
