Tangier

About Tangier

Tangier is a historic and cosmopolitan port city in Morocco, with influences from various civilizations. Visitors can explore the old town and its landmarks, as well as nearby villages and beaches. The city is also undergoing a redevelopment project to become a leading Mediterranean cruise and yachting destination.
Tangier (Tanger) is a major port city in northwestern Morocco (North Africa) located at the entrance to Gibraltar Strait where Mediterranean Sea meets Atlantic Ocean.

Tangier has been recognised for a long time in the world’s imagination as a city of exchanges, cosmopolitan and mysterious. Known as the International city in the past, it is also one of the oldest Mediterranean cities, and it still keeps the traces of civilizations and cultures who have marked its history: Phoenicians, Romans, Carthaginian, Byzantine, Vandals, Arabs, …

Tangier was and still a famous destination of artists, singers, writers, European and American diplomats, and spies. The best way of discovering Tangier is by visiting the old town (Medina) and its Casbah, enclosed by 15th century ramparts: a distillation of the essential ingredients that make up the history of this mythical, cosmopolitan and unique city:

  • The Grand Soccothe
  • Anglican St Andrew’s Church
  • Sidi Bouabid Mosque
  • The Mendoubia
  • The cafés of Petit Socco
  • Dar Baroud
  • The Jewish cemetery
  • The Casbah Museum
  • The American Legation Museum
  • The tomb of Ibn Battouta
  • The caves of Hercules
